Valentine’s Day History

Even the origin of Valentine’s Day is romantically mysterious. There are several Saint Valentine’s in history that suffered martyrdom and, originally, there were at least three different Valentine’s Days to honor these saints. The most widely accepted version of Valentine’s Day history dates back to the 3 rd century in ancient Rome. Emperor Claudius had banned marriage in an attempt to have more dedicated soldiers.

Unfortunately, the magic of romance can’t be constrained by laws and lovers were meeting in private all over Rome. St. Valentine came to the rescue of these forbidden couples and arranged secret marriages without the emperor’s knowledge. When Claudius did find out about the hidden ceremonies, St. Valentine was sentenced to execution for his disobedience; a sentence that was carried out on February 24, 270.

As he awaited execution, legend claims that St. Valentine had a love of his own. Just before his death, it is said that he sent a letter to his love, signed “From your Valentine.” Each year after, the Romans celebrated Valentine’s Day on February 14 th by giving handwritten love notes to those that had won their affection. As civilization expanded throughout the world, so did the tradition of Valentine’s Day.
