Dating a Cougar:

The Thrill of the Hunt

Whether you want to use the rather poetic term “May-December romance” or you prefer the more detached phrase, “age-disparate relationship” there's no getting around the fact that having an age gap between you and your partner can be fun, sexy and in some cases, extremely enlightening. If you are a younger man, say between the ages of nineteen and thirty, there's a good chance that you are already a familiar with the phenomenon of a woman ten to twenty years your senior seriously flirting with you. These women are known as cougars, and you'll find that they are a very real part of the dating scene.

A cougar is typically defined as a woman who ranges in age from thirty to fifty who has a taste for men who are much younger than she is. While this captures the essentials of this type of older woman, it doesn't even capture a portion of what this woman is all about. A cougar can be sophisticated, dressed to kill and seriously interested in being the aggressor in all things. Perhaps she's after a fling after a divorce, or maybe she's never been married, in which case, she matches many if not all of the cliches about swinging male bachelors of the same age. These women are proving that unattached doesn't mean lonely and unhappy, and you can reap the benefits!

There are many advantages to dating a cougar. As an older woman, this is someone who has gotten her act together. If you've been dating in your own age bracket and you're tired of petty head games and partners who are constantly indecisive, you'll find that an older woman can give you some amazing perspective. A cougar is typically a professional woman who has done well in her field; she has plenty of money and doesn't mind using it to show you a good time. For the most part, you'll even find that you don't even need to approach her; if she likes the look of you, she'll stride up and start a conversation.

One of the main advantages of dating a cougar is that the educational aspect, particularly if you are a younger man. She can introduce you to a way of life that you wouldn't have been able to experience for another twenty years if ever, and you'll get a good look at how adults can run relationships. Moreover, your average cougar is not shy in the bedroom or out of it, and if you have ever been shy about your lack of experience with women, this is the place to fix it.

Be aware, though, that this lady's got teeth and she's not afraid to us them. If she's not interested in you, be prepared for a quick rejection; she won't fool around! You'll also find that cougars might be looking for something a little more shallow than you can cope with. For the most part, she'll be blunt, and if she's looking for a no strings attached relationship, believe her. You might also find that this treatment can get a little dehumanizing over time, so think about how you feel before getting into it. Also be ready for the cougar who thinks that she can talk down to you. She might be the sophisticated older woman, but don't let her bully you or wreck what self-esteem you have; somethings just aren't worth it!

When you are looking to attract a cougar there are a few things that you can do to sweeten your chances. Look for places where older women and younger men will hang out. Downtown bars in an office area is a good bet as cougars tend to be professional women who like to enjoy some fun after hours. You also might get lucky and find a group of cougars (they often travel in packs) at your local college dive.

Although it sounds like a bit of a cliche, don't be afraid to be yourself. One reason that a cougar may be interested in younger men is that she's tired of the behavior of old ones. If she's been divorced, there's a good chance she's sick of older, sophisticated charmer who's probably ran her through the wringer a few times. If she makes your jaw drop, make sure she knows, and take her up on her offers. When dating a cougar, you won't be doing most of the work or the talking!

Your experience with a cougar can be enlightening and thrilling and it can also lead to a long-standing relationship. Don't be surprised if it doesn't however, but with a cougar, you'll have a good shot of knowing the score. She doesn't want to put off what she wants, and neither should you!
