What is Romance?

Romance has been an intricate part of society throughout all civilization, but the term has carried many different connotations through the years. Romance and romantic love were popular topics for discussion among early philosophers, like Socrates and Plato, and were referenced in many historic art forms, including literature, music, and visual art. Still today, the concrete definition of romance remains a mystery and is often debated and studied by modern psychologists and doctors. Present day artists continue to explore the emotions of romance as well.

Romance can first be defined as an intense emotion of fascination, adoration, and love within an intimate relationship. Only a few centuries ago, romance was rarely associated with marriage, especially in societies that honored arranged unions, but romance and romantic relationships have been evident throughout history. Studies of various romances over the course of time have shown a number of similarities in each relationship. Those who are romantically involved typically feel a need to share their time and rely on one another for their individual happiness. Most romantic relationships are built upon the passion that the couple feels between them.

Romance is a complex idea that is difficult to explain and even harder to control, yet romance occurs almost naturally. In our society, romance most often refers to that original excitement that brings about a relationship. Modern romances can include brief, passionate relationships, but are commonly long lasting commitments of devotion through marriage. Romantic relationships are typically intimate and generally sexually involved, but romance is not directly associated with sexual desires. Romance is about the emotions and feelings one person has for the other and their efforts to make their partner feel the same passion and intensity rather than concentrating on physical pleasures.

Some believe that romance is a fantasized love that can never bring lasting satisfaction, but others agree that romance is the fuel that keeps an enduring relationship vibrant. Romance is the passion that drives couples to make their partner feel like the most important person in the world, something that can be achieved in a number of ways.

The question, “What is romance?”, can be answered thousands of different ways. Some may say romance is a secluded picnic in a field of colorful wildflowers, while others prefer a romantic getaway for the weekend to enjoy the company of only one another. Romance can even be described as simply a display of genuine adoration.

There are many different views and beliefs regarding romance, often influenced by culture and even gender, but throughout history, societies around the world have regarded romance as the single mystery that is impossible to solve, yet immensely captivating to explore. Romance is the passion that defines mankind.
